    About Me

    hi, i am Julia Martin

Originally from Lithuania, I have spent recent years in different countries – from India to, now, Sweden. As I moved between countries, I continued studying ceramics.

Encounters with artists and various learning opportunities have allowed me to explore and gradually discover the forms, techniques, and expressions that resonate most deeply with me. I’m especially drawn to functional ceramics, objects made to be touched, used, and lived with. I want my pieces to feel familiar and grounding.

Working with clay feels real. It listens when I touch it, pushes back, and changes with every hand that shapes it. Nature gives me direction. I see it in the forms, the tones, the rough edges that remain.

Over time, I became curious about mixing my own glazes. What once felt technical or uncertain became a space of freedom – the joy of not knowing exactly how a piece will turn out. Each adjustment, each handful of material, tells a story. Every vase, bowl, or cup carries its own voice. I do not seek repetition, I glaze from feeling, from the emotion of the moment. Each time I turn on the kiln, time seems to slow. The quiet waiting for the firing, the cooling, the lifting of the lid is filled with both calm and anticipation.

Many of my works are glazed with birch wood ash from Sweden. The ash settles on the surface like a trace of its origin, forming soft textures and subtle variations – marks of transformation and chance.
